Girls with Working Moms Get Better Jobs and Higher Pay
A happy mom is the best mom
Time published an article today that announced the results of some new research. I'll let you read it but the TL;DR is that a majority of society still see a mother's place in the home, rather than at work. However, the results of the study find that girls w/ working moms tend to land better jobs and higher pay. Sons also benefit as they tend to help out around the house more.
The reason why this is important to me is because I was raised by single mom who worked full time. Obviously I can't go back and say that I'm more driven because my mom worked, but I can say that she was a very positive role model for me. At the end of the day, mom guilt is very very real and one of the reasons we created Mama Juice is because we never wanted moms to feel "less than" because of their choices.
For better or worse, work defines me and I derive a lot of self-worth from my job. It was never really a question for me that I would return to work after maternity leave (San Francisco is also outrageously expensive, so that played a huge role). Although the mom guilt was there, I knew that my daughter Quinn deserves the best version of me. And that version of me is the one who is fulfilled emotionally and intellectually, the version that is challenged and sustained by the work that I do.
On airplanes, they say that in case of emergency, put your airmask on first, before helping others. Working, for me, is that airmask.
